Did Harry Potter’s magic protect him from muggle firearms? Is there a spell that makes you bulletproof? I honestly don’t remember.
Still, a crossover between RoboCop and Harry Potter could prove interesting. Half man, half machine meets half blood? Think of the possibilities.
Defining literary terms is always easier using pop culture examples. THe problem is that sometimes students have trouble focussing on the actual example, and get caught up in the fact that it’s a reference to Harry Potter. On second thought, perhaps it isn’t easier, but I perceive it as so because I’d love any shortcut.
It’s not uncommon to have wayward students wander into your class. The worst example was I onetime I had a student sit through thirty minutes of a speech class before standing up and announcing to everyone she was supposed to be in calculus, instead. I really should stop doing differential equations to begin the semester.
Colleges do a lot these days to educate students about health and wellness. Obviously one of the biggest targets for this is the dreaded freshman fifteen. It’s become so dramatized that at times it seems like an invading boogeyman that simply can’t be avoided.
In college the health center offered free bags of condoms to any student. The freshmen orientation leaders made a big deal of this, though I never personally heard of many people going there to get any. They usually went to a store and just bought them, for whatever reason. I always assumed it was one or two people taking them all, which is a little disturbing when you think about it. There was an entire line item in the school’s budget for a couple of students’ sex lives.
You know another good show they cancelled? Drive. Sure, it wasn’t great after the six or so episodes that actually aired, but it showed the promise of being pretty good. Maybe there should be a sort of majors and minors of network programming? If you do well on NBC you get to stay, but if you struggle they demote you to the USA Network where you get at least another season to try to find an audience.
If people really were reincarnated, I wonder what would happen when they met their nemesis from a prior life? Hollywood uses ideas like this for romantic comedies, but I’d rather see a thriller. Can you imagine John Wilkes Booth the dog catcher chasing down mailman Abraham Lincoln in a battlefield of suburban sprawl? Eh, maybe not.
There’s certainly a disturbing loop one can find themselves in when being nostalgic about the cycle of life (or circle, for you Lion King fans…which should be everyone). This is why food is probably best consumer and discussed in two separate settings. Don’t worry about it once you start eating. It’s pretty much a locomotive that can’t be stopped at that point.
One-upmanship is always a bit humorous to watch. The problem is that the people participating never seem to realize it’s one of those childhood games that can go on forever.
For example, if you were to tell me you can eat six hamburgers, I could say seven. If you were to say eight, I could punch you in the throat. If you happened to be eating one of those burgers, you’d probably die. But since we’re both lying, the game simply continues with you kicking me in the spleen. No one wins.
I suppose it makes sense why people would believe the statement that we only use 10% of our brains. It sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? If I’m only using 10% now and am able to mostly manage my life, imagine what I could do with another 90%? Actually, I know what I would do. I would devote it to trying to figure out the time travel episodes of Star Trek.
