Fixing the Library


There seems to be a constant push to “fix” libraries. People claim they’re outdated or that books are no longer necessary. I suppose the greatest threat to the traditional library has been e-books, but even still there are so many services the average library offers that I find it difficult to believe they deserve on the endangered species list.

CZAR: Students were bored with books, so we're replacing the library with a cyber cafe.
HOBO: Our students have smartphones. They have Internet access anywhere!

CZAR: Fine, then what do you suggest?
HOBO: Lots of us still love old fashioned books.

CZAR: But there's nothing sexy about books!
HOBO: Call it an "adult library" and stock Tropic of Cancer near the front.
