It should be common knowledge by now that the sole purpose for most people of social networking is to keep up with the Jonses. It’s like the ultimate form of reality television, you get to spy in on every detail of a person’s life and compare how much worse it is than yours. This is especially true for old boyfriends and girlfriends.
Rick’s dog is slowly becoming a recurring character, but yet appears to lack the power of speech that Mr. Mittens possesses. Odd.
Status updates are the bane of common decency. The constant pressure to update one’s status means that people inevitably turn to easy, convenient, and thoughtless manners in which to do so. Not that music lyrics are the worst thing someone could post, but then again, neither are they particularly adding to anyone’s thoughts beyond what Amanda is expressing here.
Jimmy has a real problem with talking while chewing. That’s a dead end street, man.
While there is certainly nothing funny about the people who got sick from swine flu (or pig lung, as I call it), there is something a little funny about the over reaction on the part of some. You would have thought pig lung was the second coming of the plague from many news accounts. I’m sure this will flare up again come the holidays (as noted here).
Where did Rick get a syringe full of swine flu vaccine? They’re surely not just handing these out, right?
Unfortunately the first half of this strip is not a joke. Watch those old slasher films again and you start to get the distinct impression that they’re all about dirty old men. So, they’re films about dirty old men preying on teenage girls that we send our teenage girls to go enjoy as entertainment. Makes even the cheesy slasher films a lot more disturbing, doesn’t it?
I hope we find a way to bring back these Halloween costumes at some point. Maybe they’ll do a musical Jason Vs. Freddy?
I understand the branding aspect, but isn’t it just a little bit weird that we create cute icons to represent social media sites? Isn’t it sort of like telling people that they can connect with their friends through this site, but just in case they don’t have friends–here’s a new one! it looks like a bird–sort of.
Electronika looks like a girl I once took to a high school dance. Bam, rim shot! I’ll be here all week. And probably a lot longer, sadly.
To the best of my understanding we have technology that can block cell phones in movie theaters. Â Why are we not using it? Â Why not just install it into every theater in the country? Â By law?
I’ve heard the arguments against such tech. Â Perhaps someone really needs to be available? Â Honestly, if you’re so important you can’t be out of touch for two hours, you probably don’t need to be going to a movie in the first place. Â Sorry, Mr. Obama.
Being dirty without being dirty is sort of…dirty. Anyway, it’s amazing the crazy reasons people come up with to be anti something. There are perfectly good reasons to be against smoking, but the rhetoric surrounding it often devolves into paranoid hallucinations. Fun times.
Why are Amanda and Megan anti-smoking? Why not? They’re routinely our only characters with any sense of social conscience.
Harry Potter is great fun, and what could be more fun than seeing Harry Potter with a date? This is the kind of strip that normally gets us in trouble, because half the audience is convinced it’s the dirtiest and most offensive thing they’ve ever read. The other half? They laugh. I like to think strips like this say far more about the dirty mindedness of our audience (by way of how they intrepret it) than it does about us.
So, here’s an interesting conundrum. Is this joke funny, or is it just mean? There’s certainly a delicate balance to be walked there, but we don’t think it goes too far. Regardless, the impetus for this joke stems from David’s days as a pizza delivery guy. In fact, there’s probably a whole spin-off comic strip just waiting to be given life from those stories. But no, David did not give free pizza to hot girls. Well, not that he will admit at least.
