In fairness, Hitler was sort of friends with that Mussolini character. You don’t think the two of them ever ordered a pizza and split a cold six-pack? Nah, probably not.
Still, this seems a valuable technique for getting yourself out of trouble. Divert their attention and then run.
This is how I often feel with students. I know they’re not entirely listening at any given moment, but what surprises me is that they’re not listening to people other than me. So something like Occupy Wall Street doesn’t even register when I say it because they’ve heard it somewhere else before. At least I don’t personally feel as bad.
Students only hearing half of what a professor says isn’t always a problem. They may simply not understand an assignment and get a lower grade, but nobody dies. Still, there are those times where hearing every detail matters. Those are the times the professor rants on about a single concept for three or four weeks.
The color red as a symbol probably isn’t one of those life or death instances, but you certainly won’t sound as dumb if you hear it all.
Video games are capable of being political in an interesting manner. Games such as Beyond Good and Evil, Bioshock, and the Metal Gear Solid series make quite valiant attempts at discussing, at the least, some minor political theory or ideologies.
The problem is that most games that attempt doing so can’t even be called valiant attempts. It would be interesting to see a game that truly tackled the issue of politics in a deep manner. Maybe the Civilization series…sort of?
The idea of rich people crying about class warfare is like the professional Street Fighter player crying because some scrub in an arcade got in a lucky shot. Actually, that might make a good strip. Anyway, class warfare is probably a term the rich best avoid unless they wish to sound really stupid. I’m middle class and even I find it ridiculous to use the term about myself.
I’m always amused by the attempts to either fit in or defy the social norms. If you truly defy social norms, then you’ll probably end up looking crazy. Instead, you change some minor things about your appearance that have been pre-approved as “edgy.” Of course, that is not to criticize these people any more than the mainstream. At least they’re trying to do something different, even if they discover that’s near impossible.
Defining literary terms is always easier using pop culture examples. THe problem is that sometimes students have trouble focussing on the actual example, and get caught up in the fact that it’s a reference to Harry Potter. On second thought, perhaps it isn’t easier, but I perceive it as so because I’d love any shortcut.
You know another good show they cancelled? Drive. Sure, it wasn’t great after the six or so episodes that actually aired, but it showed the promise of being pretty good. Maybe there should be a sort of majors and minors of network programming? If you do well on NBC you get to stay, but if you struggle they demote you to the USA Network where you get at least another season to try to find an audience.
There’s certainly a disturbing loop one can find themselves in when being nostalgic about the cycle of life (or circle, for you Lion King fans…which should be everyone). This is why food is probably best consumer and discussed in two separate settings. Don’t worry about it once you start eating. It’s pretty much a locomotive that can’t be stopped at that point.
I ate so much garbage in college. Pixy Stix pizza would have been pretty good for my diet at the time. Thank goodness for high metabolism in college, and I suppose multivitamins. Otherwise I’d be dead.
