It must have been really tough to be Joseph. What were father-son events like? If he lost in the three-legged race, Joseph must have known Jesus was thinking, “If only my real dad were here.”

When you think about the lyrics, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is actually a pretty creepy song. Still, it isn’t exactly giving children nightmares like “O Tannenbaum.” Thank you, Germans.
For those confused, Rick’s line is a reference to the Saw film franchise.

Rick has a generally good understanding of the Ten Commandments. It’s just all the details that he gets wrong. Those are probably important. He should work on that.

The biggest concern with this strip was how many comments would we get from readers pointing out that nuns didn’t exist in Jesus’ time? If you’re one of those people preparing a proper thrashing for us, please don’t. It’s just a joke. Perhaps not even a funny one.
We like these strips where there’s little dialogue, but it can be read a few different ways.

Just so there is no confusion, the obvious point here is that harassing people for being homosexual is a bad thing. It is especially bad for Christians to do so. They should be especially outraged by recent events, not simply nodding along.
This is probably just about as political as we ever get with the strip, but you’ll have to excuse us. We had a point to be made about the current gay issue, and the long standing issue of saying something sounds or is gay.

This strip went through a few different versions. The original was more referential, but perhaps too much so. While funny to us, it would have ended up being too obscure for the majority of readers. The second version wasn’t quite “nail on the head” enough. This third revision seems to work best.

As a teacher, I often come into contact with wild explanations for common concepts. That’s where the idea for this strip came from. I like the idea that all the gods would sort of hang out together (that’s Ganesha and Poseidon, by the way). The background detail that they’re all seeing Twilight: Eclipse is a nice touch.

This is the type of strip that makes people mad because we’re being too literal with a definition. It isn’t actually mocking Jesus or anything, but people will take it that way. Preemptively, no, we are not making fun of Jesus.
We are, however, making fun of Kevin Sorbo.
I like the concept of these “style” Bibles so much, there’s a good chance they might turn up again in another strip. There’s one designed like a fashion magazine for teenage girls. I assume it includes makeup tips from Jezebel.
Jimmy looks so sad in every strip, even when he’s on dates with Amanda. Maybe more sad.

Ever noticed after a boxing match or some other sporting event that people give credit to God? This, of course, implies that God took sides in a basketball game. This is the idea of counter-prayer. Can one really out pray someone else to get their way?
Billy seems to have found religion in this case, despite never having shown much faith before.
