Reach for the Future

I’m intrigued by where Microsoft takes this franchise next. Halo: Reach is a great game, but I’m not sure a new developer can do much but ruin the perfect balance they currently have. I think Halo is more about balance than just about any other game series currently out there (except maybe a fighting game like Street Fighter).

This strip went through several rewrites before finally settling on this version. One of the other versions was simply an expanded version of this strip, but the joke felt like it went on too long.

I long ago gave up on explaining any video game to a non-player. The truth is that most are beyond ridiculous when given a moment or two of thought.

There’s a strange continuity we try to keep in the Professor Hobo series. Now, we don’t succeed at all in keeping it, but if you look to the first panel you’ll note that it’s Evil Beard turning up as a hippie for the second time in a strip. Why? Why not?

I’m sure some will get bent out of shape saying this strip is unfair to gamers and Halo: Reach, and they’re right. There, we said it. Now you don’t have to.

If you’ve played many video games online, then you know some people take them way too seriously. Rick is the type to do so. What should be a fun game turns into a lifelong obsession, where you resort to cursing at some 12-year-old for killing you.

David deserves a lot of credit for getting this one done.  It may not seem like a lot of work, but getting from the conceptual point to this was a massive undertaking.  If you were unaware, the strip parallels the actual God of War video game fairly close.

Yes, this strip is filled with lots of grammar jokes that only nerds will appreciate.  We prefer to think of it as possibly a fun way to teach kids grammar, which of course, seems to be in clear contradiction to our last strip where we mocked “learning is fun” ideas.

A lot of times I use this space to fail miserably at making insightful jokes.  Instead, why don’t I try offering some insight into our jokes that fail miserably?

President Czar’s first line is a pun about a colon.  Mr.Mittens’ third line is a play off of Apple’s “There’s an app for that” advertising campaign.  Obviously Kant and Locke: Dead Men and God of Grammar are plays on real video games, Kane and Lynch and God of War respectively.  Now you have a small idea of the weird logic that goes into one of our strips.

There’s been a push for some twenty plus years to make video games “educational” so kids will enjoy learning.  From Reader Rabbit to The Oregon Trail, software has come and gone but the idea remains.  I’m not exactly sure why, except that kids like video games, and wouldn’t it be ideal if video games were teaching them something, too?  Of course, a game like God of War can teach you something about mythology, but hardly the same that you could learn from a few hours of reading a book.  But that’ll be our little secret.

Mr. Mittens looks so excited in the third panel.

Console Conundrum

I struggled with this strip for about a week.  It’s one of those ideas that get stuck in your head and sort of just rolls around crushing other ideas in its way.  It felt decidedly different than many previous strips, but I liked it.  I finally relented and here it is.

If you couldn’t guess, this was inspired by my two cats who enjoy playing with my video games at least as much as I do.
